Tributary culture in other regions of the precapitalist world. II. The culture of capitalism 1. The decline of metaphysics and the reinterpretation of religion. 2. The construction of Eurocentric culture. 3. Marxism and the challenge of actually existing capitalism. 4. The culturalist evasion provincialism and fundamentalism. 5. For a truly universal culture. In this original and provocative essay Samir Amin the author of a number of pathbreaking studies on the structure of the world economy takes on one of the great ideological deformations of our time Eurocentrism. Rejecting the dominant Eurocentric view of world history which narrowly and incorrectly posits a progression from the Greek and Roman classical world to Christian Feudalism and the European capitalist system Amin presents a sweeping reinterpretation that emphasizes the crucial historical role played by the Arab Islamic world. Throughout the work Amin addresses a broad set of concerns ranging for the ideological nature of scholastic metaphysics to the meanings and shortcomings of contemporary Islamic fundamentalism. Consistently subversive of the established pieties of the west this book breaks new theoretical and historiographical ground by outlining a compelling non Eurocentric vision of world history.

Sundeep Prakashan
Contents Introduction. 1. Samkhya Yoga metaphysics. 2. Satkaryavada. 3. Parinamavada. 4. Parinamavada and Vivartavada. 5. Critical evaluation. Bibliography. Index. The present book is an attempt to give an exhaustive and critical exposition of the concept of parinama in Samkhya Yoga system. The book begins with an introduction which provides a synoptic picture of the philosophical characterization of Samkhya Yoga system. It is followed by five chapters the first chapter Metaphysics is an account of the dualism of purusa and prakrti. The Yoga view of God is also discussed. The second chapter Satkaryavada explains the theory of satkarya and the arguments of Isvara Krsna in defence of it. This chapter is a study in comparison of the two contesting theories of causation namely satkaryavada and asatkaryavada. The third chapter Parinamavada deals with the Samkhya Yoga account of parinama and the different kinds of parinama. It shows that the theory of evolution is a necessary offshoot of its doctrine of pre existent effects (satkaryavada). The fourth chapter Parinamavada and Vivartavada presents a comparative picture of parinamavada in the light of the Sankara School of Advaita Vedanta. A thorough analysis is undertaken to show how satkaryavada is not compatible with parinamavada and also how it logically culminates in vivartavada. The fifth chapter Critical Evaluation presents the main results of the study. The method of approach adopted in the book is mostly analytical and critical.
