0446517984 light edge wear to dust jacket; Robert James Waller began the pieces in this book on a warm, green morning in the summer of 1983. He hadn't set out to be a writer. He just needed to record his feelings about people and animals and things he cared about. His first story, ''Ridin' Along in Safety with Kennedy and Kuralt,'' told about being young and a musician, and how playing ''The Wabash Cannonball'' one day in a roadside bar changed the rest of his life. The Des Moines Register printed the essay, and people began asking for more. The result is Old Songs in a New Cafe. A work of nonfiction, it takes you inside Robert James Waller's mind and world...revealing insightful experiences from his own life and, with his special magic, illuminating those poignant moments most of us share. Few writers possess the power to move us. Even fewer become legends in their own time. Robert James Waller has done both. Just as you have loved his best-selling novels, you will love...

Contents: Foreword/John Berger. 1. The end of imagination. 2. The greater common good. 3. Power politics. 4. The ladies have feelings, soa 5. The algebra of infinite justice. 6. War is peace. Notes. Index. "A few weeks after India detonated a thermonuclear device in 1998, Arundhati Roy wrote The End of Imagination in which she said, 'My world has died. And I write to mourn its passing.' Published simultaneously by outlook and frontline magazines, the essay attracted worldwide attention as the voice of a brilliant Indian writer speaking out with clarity and conscience against nuclear weapons. Over the next three years, she wrote a series of political essays on a diverse range of momentous subjects: from the illusory benefits of big dams, to the downside of corporate globalization and the US Government's war against terror. "The Algebra of infinite Justice brings together all of Arundhati Roy's political writings so far. Carefully researched and closely argued, it is a profound and deeply concerned work that deserves to be widely read in these troubled times." ( jacket) No. 23893

Contents: Preface. 1. The Feringee Raj : 'Kampany Bahadoor' and the Khalsa,1849-1856. 2. The great rebellion : were the Sikhs loyal to the British in 1857? 3. From reform to revolt : Government, Arya Samaj and Punjab disturbances, 1907. 4. Fight for freedom, 1857-1947 : a bibliographical essay. 5. A slice of democracy : evolution of the electoral system in Punjab. 6. Rise of the crescent : the unionist-Muslim League conflict and partition, 1937-1947. Index. "The writings on Punjab are, in most cases, long on rhetoric but short in substance. In consequence, there is in them a lot of colour and confusion in place of comprehension and clarity. Surprisingly, there is no dearth of people even today who still get rosy fragrance from John Lawrence's smelly, stinking rule over Punjab from 1849 through 1857. The myth that the Sikhs were loyal to the British in 1857 not only survives even today but is healthy and kicking. The important questions such as what part the people of Punjab actually played in the nationalist and electoral politics from 1885 to 1947, and creation of Pakistan are yet to be answered in what could be called unambiguous terms. "The six essays given here try to answer the above questions in full but they are by no means the last words on the subject: they are a 'move' in that direction. One could also say, for a change, that they are a rejoinder to suppressed histories!" (jacket)

Both established and new poets have been included for discussion. Two of the papers in this book are on the poetry of A.K. Ramanujan in which the author gives a new insight into Ramanujan's vision imagery and diction. This collection also contains papers on some lesser known poets like O.P. Indeed the history of poetry criticism is as rich and varied a journey as the history of poetry itself. But classic writings such as Emerson's essay The Poet and Whitman's preface to Leaves of Grass serve as more than a critical call and response the works are striking examples of how the finest poets themselves have written on poetics and the works of their peers and predecessors revealing in the process much about the theory and passion behind their own works. Spanning thousands of years and including thirty three of the most influential critical essays ever written Classic Writings on poetry is the first major anthology of criticism devoted exclusively to poetry. Beginning with a survey of the history of poetics and providing an introduction and brief biography for each reading esteemed poet and critic William Harmon takes readers from Plato's Republic and Aristotle's Poetics to the Norse mythology of Snorri Sturluson's Skaldskaparmal. John Dryden's An Essay of Dramatic Poesy and Shelley's A Defense of Poetry are included as is an excerpt from Elizabeth Barrett Browning's verse novel Aurora Leigh arriving finally at the modernist sensibility of Poetic Reality and Critical Unreality by Laura (Riding) Jackson.
