Some rubbing to extremities, but still a very good copy in the original gilt decorated cloth. Protected in an old buckram cover and gilt lettered quarter morocco slipcase. 482pp. Lovely butterscotch full tree calf binding. All edges gilt, with gilt stamping round edge of front and back and upon spine. Endpapers foxed and spine lightly rubbed, otherwise very good.

First Edition 1856. Nos 1-12 (all published). MORRIS'S FIRST PUBLISHED WORK. 8vo, half dark green morocco by Worsfold recased by Aquarius Bookbinders. This copy bearing the ownership inscription dated 'May 8, 1857' of contributer and member of Morris's Oxford Set, Vernon Lushington, the man who introduced Burne-Jones to Rossetti. Morris funded the publication, and was the inaugural editor before handing over to Fulford. It was printed by Charles Whittingham at the Chiswick Press, one of the few presses at the time to take the kind of interest in type and design that would have been in sympathy with Morris and his friends. Morris negotiated with Whittingham and helped set the visual style. "if the results appear a little tentative, it has to be remembered that Morris at the time was only twenty-one." (Fiona MacCarthy, 'William Morris - A Life for Our Time'). Morris went on to use Whittingham to print his own volumes of poetry when they were published. An important copy of this scarce magazine. Lushington has marked author's names next to most of the articles on the contents pages.
