John phillips Marquand was born in Wilmington Deleware and spent most of his boyhood i n New York City and Newburyport, Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard College in 1915, worked for a time with the Boston Transscipt, and served as a first Lieuntentenant in the Field of Artillery in the First World War, participating in many of the campaigns and offenses in France. Those who knew him at the Harvard Lampoon knew of his talents as a writer but it would not come until later theat he would would breakthrough with The Late Goerge Apley as his first novel. It took critics and Boston people by storm. He did much confidential work for the War Department during the Second World War . He now is a judge for the Book of the Month Club and lives most of the time in Newburyport, Ma. He actually lived in Newbury near the old train tracks along the marsh. This the first Novel by Mr. Marquand in which a woman is the protagonist. It is comedy of manners covering contempraneously and in retrospect a period of thirty years. Polly Fulton ahd everything. She was beautiful she had brains, she was wealthy. Her Father Burton Fulton, self made Industrial tycconknown to his business and family friend's as B.F., could give her anything she wanted as he did. Their palatial home at Gray's Point, Connecticut, their park avenue apartment, her exclusive school her trips abroad made her life's lucky ones. Polly was loved. She was loved by quiet adoration by Bob Tasmin, who went to Groton, and Harvard Law Scho ol. She was loved by Thomas Brett, radical thinker and teacher from Columbia who would love her far after they met in a speak easy in New York and well into their marriage. But B.F. always dominated h is daughter without her realizing it. Unconsciously she would try to dominate the men that loved her. That Strength that Polly inherited from her father-- the strength of his wealth, the freedom of fo rm convention, strength of generosity and strength of his determination . During these times she would have to learn life the hard way from now on. In her thirties now, Polly was living a new Life.
