Fine 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Very Good Hard Cover First Edition Scottish historical novel set in the time of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce and the battles for Scotland's independence from England. A superb evocation of a Scotland's proud past. The tale begins with the death of the a great king of peace, Alexander III, and ends when Robert Bruce, a great king of war, recieves his crown at scone from the hands of a woman; and the spirit of William Wallace informs it throughout. It tells of the fashioning of a hero king who was one of the great soldiers of history, who took a kingdom which had thrice been obliterarted in thirteen years, and carried it through twenty-two years war, against huge odds, to victory and freedom. As background to that making of a man, there is a story curiously modern, for what happend to Scotland round about 1300 has happend to many countries in our own time, and though Dr. Mackenzie has closely followed the facts-hardly a character is imaginary-the paralells to contemporary Europe are very often so close to be starltling. Rare in this conditon. Some wear and tear to d/j.
