1st edition. ~ Contemporary calf, P. 2 volumes. xvi+430+26pp, [x]+338+16pp, folding plan of the Ark in volume IV, a working set only. spines rather worn & the margins of the texrt blocks waterstained throughout, just affecting the text. Hinges weak held by the cords. Bookplate of Charles Grave Hudson. ~ The last 2 volumes, containing books 5, 6, 7 & 8 of Lewis' History of the Jewish Republic, and complete in themselves depite the contradiction of the contents. The first two volumes appeared in 1724 with a different letterpress title and pagination split between the two volumes. Lewis states in his preface that 'my first Inquiries into the Antiquites of the Hebrews' were recieved with that favour, wbhich gave me sufficient encouragement to persue the work'. these two volumes thus continus his work with much on the arts, & science of the Jews, as can be gleanded from the Bible & other early Jewish sources. Thomas Lewis [ 1689 - 1749 ] a controversialist & preacher. Attacked the Scottish Presbyterians with such ferocity in his paper 'The Scourge' that his paper was presented before the grand jury & he was ordered to stand trial for Sedition. Of this work the DNB states 'a laborious compliation'.
