The Lost Girl
Lawrence, D.H.
Good 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall No Jacket Cloth First Edition In variant orange/brown cloth, possibly produced for the Times Book Club. 'The Lost Girl' was of quite early vintage, for it was begun in Gargnano, Italy in 1913; Lawrence mentions 'The Insurrection of Miss Houghton', an early title for the book, in a letter to Edward Garnett from Irschenhausen in which he says he has finished two hundred pages of the novel. The finishing touches were probably done at Fontana Vecchia in Taormina; Lawrence announced in a letter to Lady Cynthia Asquith, written 7 May 1920, that he had just completed the book. 'The Lost Girl' received the James Tait Black Prize of Edimnburgh University in 1921. Although Lawrence considered the book quite 'moral', some passages were changed to satisfy demands of the 'libraries'. Thus it is that 'The Lost Girl' is distinguished by three states (Roberts A16). Second Issue.
