A man of international fame, great distinction, and the recipient of countless honors - including the knighthood from a grateful government - he began his fantastic career as an orphan from Ireland. He entered the British Civil Service almost by fluke, quickly made a name for himself, and then soared into world notice with his audacious report on slave labor conditions in the Congo, and later, in the rubber-growing regions of the Peruvian jungle. With the outbreak of the first world war, Casement threw in his lot with the militant Irish nationalist movement, made his way to Germany and, openly defying Britain, attempted to recruit an "Irish Brigade" among captured Irish prisoners of war.
