Disillusioned with modern Western society, Hearn adopted the Buddhist religion and became a naturalized Japanese citizen; he learned fluent Japanese in a remarkably short time and became one of the first non-Japanese to be appointed as a lecturer at Tokyo University. Hearn's writings bore witness to a time when Japan was changing rapidly under the influence of the West and for any reader with a keen interest in Japan, Hearn's interpretation is still highly relevant.
