Fables In Two Parts By The Late Mr Gay
Gay, John
reprint.~ Full contemporary calf, VG. viii+176pp, slight browning to the paper, edges of the leather rubbed a little, a nice tight copy. Old ownership inscription of Emily Fowler of Hamborough, Kent. ~ The book contains both parts of Gays [ 1685 - 1732 ] Fables - 50 were published in his lifetime, the remaining 16 posthumously, in 1738. The Fables are different in character, the first bright, moral & playful the second political & satyrical. It was not until 1750 that both were published together. The Fables contain animals & inanimate objects conversing with humans - it was always Gay's intention for his Fables to appeal to children. To this end most editions contain illustrations. This edition is unusual in that it does not. An attractive copy from a provincial printer.

1st edition.~ Cloth spined boards, VG. 215pp, a nice copy, boards yellowed as usual, cloth a little worn, foxing to the fore edge, internally fine. ~ Useful reprinting of the two parts of Gay's satitical comic opera which was first performed in 1728. The book also contains the score by Johann Christoph Pepusch. The Beggar's Opera is the only work of its kind - the Ballad Opera - still performed regularly today, despite being an immensely popular form of entertainment in its day. John Gay [ 1785 - 1732 ] English poet, this work his most famous.

Very Good 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall Paperback First Edition Jean Valjean, convicted of stealing bread, is hounded for decades by the relentless and cruel policeman Javert. This is a great story and for me this is the best screen adaptation of it. Although Geoffrey Rush puts in a decent performance in the newer film release (1998), Anthony Perkins' Javert simply cannot be bettered with his steely, cold personality and determination. Jordon also does well with the Valjean character, emitting a personality of pride and restraint in the face of adversity. The story moves on at a decent pace and provides good characterisation without too much lagging.Overall this is a fine production and I personally find it vastly superior to the latest film incarnation with Liam Neeson and Geoffrey Rush where I didn't particularly like either of the portrayals of the leading characters, even though they were well-acted. This version may have the obligatory TV Movie feel to it, but it still manages to rise above its Big-screen counterpart. Camera operator David Harcourt's working copy of the film screenplay including some revisons and shooting schedules loose inside. The TV movie was released in 1977. David Harcourt also worked on "The Magus (1978) "The Day of the Jackal" (1973) and "One-Million Years B.C." A unique piece of Film History.
