A Menace To Society: My 35 Years In Prison For Stealing 40 Pounds
Fletcher, John William
Good 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Good Hard Cover First Edition Born in 1915, Bill Fletcher hardly had a family life and was sent to an approved school for truancy at 7 years old, then served time on a training ship and Borstal. At 17 he was sentenced to 2 years for stealing cigarettes. The total sum of the goods he stole was £40, yet he spent some 35 years of his life in prison, having become institutionalised and committing petty theft to get back inside where he felt safe. A stark story of a system where help for minor criminals was not forthcoming.
