At 17 he was sentenced to 2 years for stealing cigarettes. The total sum of the goods he stole was £40, yet he spent some 35 years of his life in prison, having become institutionalised and committing petty theft to get back inside where he felt safe. A stark story of a system where help for minor criminals was not forthcoming.
