16th edition. ~ Contemporary full calf, G. xxxvi+329+[7]pp, fine woodcut frontis boldly signed by Charlton Nesbit, 196 woodcut illustrations, leather rathr worn & rubbed, hinges spliting, text block yellowed & with the occasional old ink splash, spine cracked & rubbed lacking the lettering piece, a nice quaint copy. ~ Attractive edition of the Fables by Samuel Croxall [ 1688 - 1752 ] poet & Archdeacon of Hereford Cathedral. The woodcuts are simple but attractive. This edition has a frontis by Charlton Nesbit [ 1775 - 1838 ] who was apprenticed to Thomas Bewick. Upon finishing his apprenticeship he went to London & was gainfully employed - executing one of the largest ever wood engravings. According to the DNB - 'the best of Bewick's pupils'.
