This speech is in response to a polt carried out in January 1858 by an Italian called Orsini. It was Orsini's plan to assassinate Napoleon III and thus bring turmoil to Europe, which he hoped would free Italy from Austrian rule. Later in the same year Cavour himself plotted with Napoleon III against the Austrian Empire to try & bring about the reorganisation of the Italian Peninsular.
