';Never did I know such universal grief.... high and low, rich and poor, from the Queen to the common labourer';. So spoke his contemporary Lord Aberdeen on the death of perhaps the most notable British politician of the first half of the nineteenth century. Robert Peel';s legacy still influences the British way of life. As Home Secretary he created the modern police force, which became known colloquially as the Peelers or the Bobbies. His Tamworth manifesto is seen as the basis of enlightened Conservatism. He also introduced in come tax (seven old pence in the pound) and is remembered, too, for the repeal of the Corn Laws, an issue as divisive as Europe was to be a century and a half later.
