Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Printing. Frontispiece Portrait, Preface, List of Portraits [nine, including the frontispiece], Bibliography of King's principal published works, Synoptic Index, followed by announcement of a new edition of King's book; vii, 429 pages. The original gray paper-covered boards are a bit sunned at the edges with some wear on the corners. The gilt on the upper board is still attractive, however---with its impressive depiction of the "helmet"---despite a mark of superficial abrasion. [Visible in one of my five images, q.v.] The vellum spine shows a bit of darkening, as usual, with the gilt lettering still easily discernible. The interior has remained fresh, crisp and clean, with only a few pale freckles on the rear endpapers. Top-edge gilt; others untrimmed. In this 'Memorial Book' to Clarence King, there are six full-page portraits of him and two of Horace F. Cutter (one as "Don Horacio"), recipient of King's amusing short story inspired by Cervantes' Don Quixote, first published in the 'Century Magazine' in 1886. It is included here, along with the letter that had first accompanied it that contains the caveat, "be careful that it does not by any misadventure get into print." [!] Contributors: Clarence King, James D. Hague (two entries plus the Preface), Henry Adams, William Crary Brownell, Edward Cary (two entries), Samuel Franklin Emmons, Daniel C. Gilman, John Hay, William Dean Howells, John LaFarge, Rossiter W. Raymond, and Edmund Clarence Stedman. As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly with tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking. Please note that, due to COVID, overseas shipping may incur unusual delays.

With an introduction by Henry James and William Dean Howells. Evelyn G. Smalley was a family friend of Henry James (he worked closely with him on this book). Portrait frontispiece. Very good indeed. Excellent condition.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. HBDJ, UNDATED But 1932, Early edition,VG/GOOD-, Back of Creased DJ lists 200 titles indicating a 1932 issuance with Pre Zipcode Coupon, Very Good Book with Good- DJ , SMALL Burgundy cloth with gilt gilt torch Bearer on front & gilt titles on Soine with FADE at Btm, The DJ has numerous chips and closed tears, the most significant of which are a half-inch chip to top of spine and an inch long chunk missing from bottom of DJ spine. Moderate staining and sun-darkening to spine, but all in one piece. The book is maroon balloon cloth and the boards are quite bright and clean as is the gold gilt although there are two faded spots on top and bottom of spine. The top stain is mildly faded. The binding is still solid. The pages are bright and clean and have just typical foxing. Given the above, I would grade the book Very Good.
