Grade 4-6-A concise, well-organized history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that concentrates on the religious influences instrumental in the founding of this "holy city." The author describes the life and death of Joseph Smith, the church founder, and of Brigham Young, leader of the Mormon pioneers. Information on such landmarks as the Great Salt Lake, the Temple, and the Tabernacle (home of the world-famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir) is also included. Doubleday adequately summarizes the basic beliefs of the Mormons in chapters on traditions, ceremonies, geneaology, and the church's welfare program. A good mixture of full-color and historical photographs complements the text. Key vocabulary words are noted in boldface and defined at the end of each chapter; pronunciations, however, are not provided. Becky Ayres's Salt Lake City (Dillon, 1990) is similar in content but focuses less on the role of the Mormon Church.
