Grade 7 Up–This anthology examines four court cases that offer insight into some of America's most important environmental conflicts. The cases include citizens' right to protect the environment, Scenic Hudson Preservation Conference v. Federal Power Commission (1965); wildlife management against economic interests, Seattle Audubon Society v. John L. Evans and Washington Contract Loggers Association (1991); balancing private-property rights against environmental conservation, Lucas v. South Carolina Coastal Council (1992); and preserving endangered species, Babbitt v. Sweet Home Chapter of Communities for a Greater Oregon (1995). Each case overview is followed by a synopsis of the court's decision and dissents and reactions to the rulings offered by people involved or other commentators. Together these materials offer readers the opportunity to review a controversy and then explore the social ramifications of the ruling.
