9780007591923: Head of State: The Bestselling Brexit Thriller

The debut novel by Britain’s most celebrated journalist, a gleefully twisted take on 10 Downing Street

It’s September 2017, and the United Kingdom is on the verge of a crucial referendum that will determine, once and for all, if the country remains a member of the European Union or goes its own way. But, unsuspected by the electorate, and unknown to all but a handful of members of the Prime Minister’s innermost circle, there is a shocking secret at the very heart of government that could change everything in an instant. A group of ruthlessly determined individuals will stop at nothing―including murder―to prevent that from happening.

Andrew Marr’s first novel is a darkly comic tale of deception and skullduggery at Downing Street and Whitehall. Making full use of his unrivalled inside knowledge of the British political scene, Marr has created a sparkling entertainment, a wholly original depiction of Westminster and its denizens, and a fascinating, irreverent glimpse behind the parliamentary curtain.

About the Author:
Andrew Marr is a former editor of the Independent and BBC political editor. His acclaimed television documentary series include Andrew Marr’s History of Modern Britain and Andrew Marr’s The Making of Modern Britain. He is also a hugely successful nonfiction author.
Review:
"Clever dark humor, witty prose, and a rigorously constructed plot add up to a thought-provoking read." —Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

"Witty. Imaginative. Irreverent." —Kirkus (Starred Review)

"The tantalizing sense that the important actions of politics take place just out of sight, hidden from all but a tiny circle of insiders, pervades this novel and is perhaps its true subject. The author, Andrew Marr, is well placed to deliver such a story, being one of his country’s most prominent political journalists." —The New York Times

"As one of the U.K.’s top political journalists — former editor of The Independent and political editor of the BBC — Andrew Marr knows his way around the backrooms of British politics." —Toronto Star

Praise for the work of Andrew Marr:

“Lively, readable and engaging . . . vivid character studies and colorful vignettes, some of cinematic brilliance.” —The Guardian

“Superb, colorful, outspoken, fresh, and richly entertaining. Don’t miss.” —The Times

Book Description Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Two corpses. A country on the edge of a political precipice. A conspiracy so bold it would make Machiavelli wince. Andrew Marrs debut novel imagines what really might be going on behind the door of 10 Downing Street. When a young investigative reporter is found dead on the streets of London few people notice. But when another body minus its head and hands is washed up on the banks of the Thames, its grisly condition arouses a little more interest. There appears to be no connection between the two dead men. But, unsuspected by the electorate, there is a shocking and dangerous secret at the very heart of government. While the United Kingdom approaches a crucial and delicately-balanced referendum on Europe, a group of ruthlessly determined individuals will stop at nothing including murder to prevent the truth from getting out. Andrew Marrs first novel is a gleefully twisted spin through the corridors of power. Making full use of his unrivalled inside knowledge of the British political scene, Marr has threaded his wickedly clever thriller with a distinctive strand of pitch-black humour, to offer an irreverent glimpse behind the parliamentary curtain. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Seller Inventory # GOR006074981
